Expository Sermon Outlines

by Dr. David S. Thomason

“Publish or Perish.” I’m not sure if Spurgeon ever said that, but I was told that he did. And upon hearing that, it made an impact on my ministry.

It doesn’t seem like many fundamentalists write. It might be that, as a group, we’re not smart enough (!!), or it might be that as a group, we’re too busy. It might be that we don’t think it’s important enough to devote any energy. But for whatever reason(s), Fundamentalists are not known as writers. And that’s a shame - because that means that most of our best tools are not fundamental!

Upon entering the pastorate, I was challenged with that “Publish or Perish” quote, and I decided that I didn’t want my studies to perish. So when I worked on sermon notes, I decided to write more than I would need. The result of that line of thinking turned into about 4 full pages of extended sermon outlines each time I preached. It was way more detail than I needed for any specific sermon; but it gave me the bare bones to (someday) be able to write.

Now, “someday” hasn’t come yet. Someday I would like to turn these expository outlines into “real books” that could be a real help to real people. But for now, I can make these expository outlines “e-books” that can be “e-help” to “e–people” using “e-Sword” (and The Word, too!).

Thus was born my series I’ve taken to calling Bible Preachin’. These are expository sermon outlines. Most will include full introductions, illustrations and conclusions. All of them are complete outlines, averaging 4 full pages of text. They are not manuscripts; they are, though, close to full manuscripts.

Each volume includes a brief introduction to the book, and a good bibliography - including notation of where material can be found formatted for eSword, .pdf, or some other free content. The Bibliography is worth the price of the module (by the way - that’s free)!

If you’re an expository teacher or preacher, I think these outlines will be helpful and give you ideas as to how to present a text. It is my prayer that they will be helpful in your studies of God’s Word.
